The Malagasy Ariary is the official currency of Madagascar. The Ariary was first introduced in 1961 after Madagascar gained its independence from France replacing the Malagasy Franc.
The Malagasy currency are broken down into bills of $20,000.00AR, $10,000.00AR, $5,000.00AR, $2,000.00AR, $1,000.00AR $500.00AR, $200.00AR and $100.00AR. Although not common there are also 4 coins used as currency in Madagascar $50.00AR coin, $20.00AR coin, $10.00AR coinand $5.00AR coin. Below I have placed pictures of each.
So as Peace Corps volunteers in trainings all of our meals and cost of living are covered. This includes a weekly allowance of $35,000.00 ariary which equals to about $11.72 cents according to xe.com. Our weekly allowances are typically given to us so that we can use to buy everyday necessities such as toilet paper, laundry soap a snack or something to drink.
